We are close to the enchanting forest park Bosco Romagno, green lung of 53 wooded acres that extend between the town of Prepotto and Corno di Rosazzo. In ancient times, it was the stronghold of the Lombard kingdom, considered as a point of strategic importance, now it is a destination for nature excursions and educational tours.
The history of Vie D’Alt began about 100 years ago, when the grandfather and the founder, Antonio Venica, bought the first vineyard called Vie D’Alt in 1915, marking the start of a great adventure. This hectare of prestigious vineyard dominates the whole valley of the property. The terraced vineyards of Vie D’Alt are placed in a suggestive natural amphitheater, spread over 18 hectares and can be admired from the window of the new tasting room just finished. The company is now run by the Venica family and at the forefront there are the sisters Nadia, Mara and Giulia who carry on with great enthusiasm the activity of four generations. With the tranquility that this place transmits, we talk with Nadia about his task as an oenologist salesperson, she presents us with pride the new label and the historical change of image. The new logo is stylized tulip, composed of three golden petals embraced in in geometric harmony, representing the three protagonist sisters.
THE LAND OF THE ORIENTAL COLORS OF FRIULI
The Colli Orientali formed 58-38 million years ago during the tertiary era through a slow sedimentation process that gave rise to imposing formations that emerged from the waters following the withdrawal of the sea. The deposits today show alternation of layers of marl (calcareous clay) and sandstone (calcified sands rich in silica): a soil called “Ponca”.
A true gift of Nature for the vineyards of VIE D’ALT, the ponca plays an important role in maintaining the quality of the wines … Originally, the ponca is gray-blue in color but changes to gray-yellowish in the presence of atmospheric agents. Crumbling, it turns into clayey soil capable of retaining water, an advantage for vineyards during drought periods. Moreover, the light color of the ponca moderates the soil’s absorption of heat during the summer days. The slow ripening of the grapes is therefore also facilitated by the reduced temperature change of the soil between day and night.
In addition, the nutrients present in the ponca, rich in calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and potassium, provide the plant with vital minerals for healthy and long-lasting growth of the vines. In Friuli Colli Orientali, thanks to this soil, the conditions for the evolution of the aromatic components and for the good acidity of the wines are also excellent.
The terracings created by man, in the local Friulian language “roncs”, avoid the corrosion of the ponca and therefore the crumbling of the land. Vineyards and woods alternate along the hills, an unforgettable landscape to visit …
Where the vine blooms, today we collect the fruits. They are our wines: fragrant, genuine, generous, elegant. And they speak Friulian. “Vie d’Alt” in fact is the voice of the earth, is the name of our first vineyard, the “Via Alta”, bought by the founder Venica Antonio back in 1915.
The family is our strength. We are three sisters with the same passion: Nadia with Luca, Mara with Christian and Giulia, the fourth generation who looks to the future, without forgetting the traditions handed down by their parents Bruno and Paola.
The new winery is the beating heart of our garden: 18 hectares of vineyards on the hills that frame Prepotto, in the DOC “Friuli Colli Orientali, an area highly suited to quality viticulture thanks to its microclimate and unique characteristics of the land.
Because the truth is that we love doing what we do: we harvest our grapes by hand, we protect the fauna and flora by limiting the use of insecticides, we have not been using herbicides for years, we prefer the natural balances and rhythms of nature, with a well-thought out and environmentally friendly viticulture. And above all, we hate rush, the land requires patience!
But also energy: ours is “clean” because since 2008 we have installed solar panels and photovoltaic panels.
